HEBIE HISTORY

A LOOK INTO THE PAST OF HEBIE GMBH & CO. KG

For the history of the company, we have to go back to the middle of the 19th century. What began as a cork cutting workshop in Bielefeld is now part of the HEBIE GROUP – a group of companies with sites in Bielefeld, Münster and Taichung in Taiwan.

Heinrich Hemmelskamp
1868
Heinrich Hemmelskamp founded the cork-cutting factory Hemmelskamp on the 21. January 1868. The range of corks for bottles met a regional gap in the market and the clientele consisted of drinks merchants and pub landlords as well as breweries in the region. At the end of the 19th century the bicycle became a new means of transport and Bielefeld developed into a centre of the bicycle industry. One of the founding fathers of the Bielefeld bicycle branch, Nikolaus Dürkopp, was looking for a reliable supplier at the turn of the century and told Carl Junker, Heinrich Hemmelskamp’s son-in-law, of his need for bicycle handles made of cork.
Carl Junker
1905
Thus it came to be that Carl Junker, sole proprietor of the company, started the production of bicycle parts in Bielefeld in October 1905. Even before the start of the First World War, production of handles, which were now made of celluloid manufactured in the in-house synthetics department, was followed by the production of other bicycle parts: chain guards, air pumps and mud guards.
Heinz Junker
1914–1925
From 1914 part of the range was also manufactured in metal. The First World War from 1914 to 1918 disrupted the company’s hopeful development and the number of employees was reduced to just 30 workers just before the end of the war. After the war, the turnover of German bicycle factories once again increased quickly. Strong demand from abroad also ensured a renewed impetus. Carl Junker died in the first year of peace in 1919 and his wife Martha Junker led the company until her son Heinz Junker took over in 1924/25. Production of corks was stopped all together during the course of a rationalisation program in 1922.
1925–1932
On the 1. January 1925 the company was transformed to become an open commercial enterprise where instead of: "H. Hemmelskamp, Celluloid – und Metallwarenfabrik, Bielefeld" it adopted a new brand name HEBIE (= HEmmelskamp BIElefeld). In 1926, the wages department registered 250 employees and Hebie increased its production program, the stamping workshop and the welding department having been expanded to deal with front and rear luggage racks. Ruinous competition in the bicycle market in 1928 shrunk profits rapidly and led to a partial decline in the industry in 1929.

But the company also recovered from this trend, so that Hebie grew from 105 employees in the year 1932 to 183 members of staff 5 years later. The range had proved itself up to now: bicycle handles made of celluloid, chain guards in various designs, luggage racks, bicycle locks and – new in the program – bicycle stands in metal and malleable cast iron. Despite difficulties in procuring materials, production in bicycle parts never ceased fully during the Second World War. In contrast to other local industries the company survived the war undamaged.
1932
Hebie starts with the production of bicycle stands in metal and malleable cast iron.
Karl Heinz Junker und die Anhängerkupplung
1948
After 1945 Hebie initially made a new start with crown caps. German bicycle industry production numbers exploded from 1948 and already by the year 1951 Hebie employed 230 people again. Karl-Heinz Junker, son of Heinz Junker, became managing director at that time. A post war innovation was the bicycle tow-bars, which are part of Hebie’s range to this day.
1955
As the first small cars became affordable from 1955 a decline of almost a decade and a half started in German bicycle production. Towards the end of the Sixties, however, the bicycle industry could develop once again more expansively. The energy shock of the first oil crisis of 1973/74 increased this trend.
1970er
A selection of bicycle parts, e.g. chain guards, are no longer made of tin but of plastics. The first clip-on mudguard on the market at all comes from Hebie.
1980er
With the beginning of the eighties, the situation of the German bicycle/bicycle parts production changed again. New suppliers form the Far East were able, partially due to lower wage and salary on-costs, to balance out their geographical disadvantages and became real competitors to the strengthening rivals within Europe. Because of these circumstances, Heinz-Dietrich Junker, who had now taken over leadership of the company from his father Karl-Heinz Junker, decided successfully to tighten up the range and to concentrate on the high-end, more expensive quality segment.
1990er
Hebie develops all ideas and also the relevant constructions in-house in Bielefeld. 90 % of products known for decades in the ranges of parking, protection and transport are currently manufactured in Bielefeld. The product range includes mudguards, chain guards, carriers, stands, steering dampers and much more for bicycles.
Dirk Niermann
2004
In 2004 Heinz-Dietrich Junker retires from operative duties and Dirk Niermann becomes the new managing director of the company. Already active in the industry since 1986, he is enthusiastic about the most efficient and cleanest means of transport; the bicycle. His 25-year connection with Hebie gives him a high level of identification with the values of the company.
2006
The innovative CHAINGLIDER chainguard comes onto the market.
2010
Hebie is certified with the ÖKOPROFIT® environmental management system for the first time. The first sustainability report for the 2021 reporting year is published in 2022.
2014
With the corporate identity concept newly launched in 2014, the company conveys a clear direction. "Innovations for your bicycle. Since 1868." stands for innovative products from a reliable as well as value and future-oriented partner.
2017
Hebie Asia Ltd. is founded. With the warehouse in Chuanghwa, Taiwan, we can guarantee even faster availability in the Asia region. Today, the team is based in Taichung. The CHAINLOOPER is launched on the market. The patented chainguard for children’s bikes not only enhances the look of the bike, but also makes conventional children’s chainguards look old-fashioned, thanks to its superior function, stable construction and slim design.
2018
The Hebie family business is 150 years old, making it one of the oldest companies in the bicycle industry. In spring 2018, Hebie takes over the mudguard manufacturer and market leader in the system carrier sector – tubus carrier systems GmbH – based in Münster. The HEBIE GROUP can now offer the market comprehensive solutions for protection and loads on bicycles. With the takeover of tubus, the successful ALUMEE is added to the mudguard product family. In the year the HEBIE GROUP was founded, there was also a brief period of exclusive sales cooperation with Airwings, but this was dissolved after just two years.
Christian Junker
2019
Generation change at the HEBIE GROUP in Bielefeld: 2019 begins with a change in management. Dirk Niermann steps down as managing director and hands over the baton to Christian Junker, now the new managing director of Hebie GmbH & Co. KG in Bielefeld and tubus carrier systems GmbH in Münster. Christian Junker is now the sixth generation of his family to run the traditional family business.
2023
Hebie establishes itself as an absolute specialist in the stand sector. This gives rise to new market requirements, such as the new “INVISIBLE CONNECT” stand interface (“IC” for short). Market observations clearly show that OEMs are increasingly demanding that the interface between the stand and the frame be as invisible and integrated as possible. IC not only solves these requirements, but also offers variable positioning of the interface along the chain stay. This allows more space to be created elsewhere, usually at the dropout, and an optimal contact point to be selected for the wheel.

TUBUS HISTORY

A LOOK INTO THE PAST OF TUBUS CARRIER SYSTEMS GMBH

tubus and racktime carriers have made bicycle history and are market leaders in their fields. They are regarded worldwide as pioneers in the field of heavy-duty and lightweight carriers made of steel and titanium and system carriers made of aluminium.

1988
Foundation of tubus carrier systems GmbH in 1988 in Münster by Peter Ronge. His goal: to develop a lightweight yet extremely stable carrier that is designed for extremely heavy loads and is perfect for long bike journeys. For the first tubus model, the CARGO, he chose very thin-walled, highly tempered steel tubes made of 25CrMo4 steel. Initially, the tubes were simply placed on top of each other and soldered, but now the connection is made using a welding process that ensures even greater stability and precision. The great success of the CARGO motivates Peter Ronge to concentrate fully on the development, production and sale of steel carriers. Under the name tubus (Latin for tube), a brand was created that to this day stands for quality, durability and sophisticated design.
1990
Market launch of the two tubus models FLY and LOGO. The FLY is a carrier that is visually and structurally minimised, but at the same time offers a high load capacity. The LOGO becomes the standard carrier for people travelling by bike. It has a visually reduced platform and a second loading level for panniers, whose lower centre of gravity significantly improves handling when the bike is fully loaded.
2006/07
The racktime brand establishes itself for functional system carriers that are made entirely from high-strength aluminium tubes and are primarily used for everyday use. However, the main highlight is the well-known SNAPIT system. It allows customers to securely and easily attach and detach bags and baskets to and from the carrier with a single movement. An absolute innovation for safe and practical luggage transport by bike. At the same time, the first piece of luggage produced by racktime with a SNAPIT bracket was launched on the market: The BASKIT.
2009/10
tubus has developed and is now even launching new titanium carrier models on the market: CARRY, LOGO and AIRY. The company is thus demonstrating that it is possible to manufacture very lightweight, high-strength and extremely weather-resistant carriers from this difficult-to-process and expensive material, which at the same time remain affordable (albeit in the high-price segment). The titanium carriers are ideal companions for the most demanding customers who do not want to compromise between carrier weight and load capacity. Today, the tubus portfolio comprises a total of four titanium carriers: AIRY, LIVIANO, DUO TITAN and TARA TITAN.
2011/12
The EVO models are launched on the market. All variants are a consistent further development of the existing tubus carriers. They are characterised by very rigid 3D feet and variable mounting points that allow the stays to be mounted flexibly.
2018
tubus carrier systems GmbH, including the racktime brand, is taken over by the Hebie GmbH & Co. KG and, together with Hebie Asia, becomes part of the newly formed HEBIE GROUP. As a group of companies, the HEBIE GROUP can now offer comprehensive, complementary solutions for protection and loads on bicycles. Peter Ronge stays with the HEBIE GROUP for another 1.5 years as a consultant, while Dirk Niermann takes over the role of managing director.
2019
As managing director of Hebie GmbH & Co. KG, Christian Junker also becomes managing director of tubus carrier systems GmbH.
2020
The SNAPIT 2.0 system is the logical further development of the tried-and-tested SNAPIT principle. With the same performance, the SNAPIT 2.0 is much easier to use and is completely “Made in Bielefeld”. The carriers with the SNAPIT system surface impress with their extremely clean look, so that you can no longer tell that they are a system carrier.
2021
The CARL & MARTA brand is launched. Under the names that can also be found in our own history, accessory products are created that combine the best of the future and the modern. Products from CARL & MARTA are very well designed and all have the potential to become timeless classics in the accessories segment without sacrificing functionality.
2022
tubus is certified with the ÖKOPROFIT® environmental management system for the first time. The first sustainability report for the 2021 reporting year is published in 2022.
